They both do well, but Eric decides to take on the task of college and military instead of waiting a few years like his girlfriend. He finishes college at age 22, still dating Susan. Because he now has a bachelor's degree he is in line for a promotion to become an officer. Before he gets promoted a commanding officer ask when he plans on marrying Susan. He and Susan both love each other but they both do not want that much of a commitment at such a young age. The military does not allow officers and enlisted to date. They offer some leeway when it comes to couples dating before the military. The couple in question still has to marry once one partner becomes an officer in order to not receive disciplinary actions. Like Susan and Eric, the thought of marrying young can cause tension in any relationship. Most people do not get married until they are 27. Committing to another person at only 22 puts a lot of stress on a couple. Many do not want to break up, but the only other alternative involves a commitment they can not make.

Women could not serve until World War I and even then it was only for the United State Navy or Marine Corps. Before women joined the only rules involving officer to enlisted relations forbade fraternization between the ranks. Gay also could not join. Statistically gays had to have been in the ranks. We do not hear a lot about gays in the military because they did such a good job with hiding their homosexuality. Later in World War II lesbians did the same exact thing that their closeted counterparts did thirty years prior. If they came out then they would get kick out or demoted based on the circumstance. If the gay and lesbians could hide thier love in the twentieth century than heterosexual couples should be able to do it just as well. If the military never figures out about relationships then it can not punish
