Leadership is defined as influencing others by providing purpose, motivation, and direction (ADP 6-22). A leader will not always be the smartest person, there will always be someone more proficient in tactics or marksmanship than they are. A leader will not always be the strongest person, someone will always have a higher APFT score. These things don’t make them bad leaders, these things make them human. A leader is there to guide their soldiers. According to ADP 6-22, character, presence, intellect, and development are the main attributes a leader should possess.
Character, I believe is one of the most important attributes for a military leader to have. Leading a group of soldiers is different than leading a group of coworkers. Soldiers are away from their families, putting their life on the line for our country, therefor they need more from a leader than to just make the decisions. They need someone who demonstrates the army values (ADP 6-22). A leader should demonstrate absolute loyalty to their country and their soldiers. Soldiers are more likely to trust a loyal leader because they are more motivated to obtain their goals. They should respect everyone, because they expect everyone to respect them. When respecting someone, you trust that they have done their part to meet the common goal.

Development involves not only developing as a leader but developing their soldiers. Leaders should focus on developing themselves into a better leader by taking the time to learn the things they don’t know. They should also take the time to better themselves that way they can better their soldiers. It is important for a leader to develop their soldiers so that they are always improving. They should develop their soldiers by teaching them new things and encouraging them to do new things. Not everyone can know everything, so a leader should teach their soldiers but also learn from their
