Marine customs and courtesies are the basis of Marine Corps history. In the Marine Corps, almost every courtesy and custom has come from the way Marines have behaved and served in the past. Many Marine customs and courtesies have been converted into regulations to show the modern Marine how to conduct themselves. Some of them cannot be found in written Marine Corps Orders (MCO) or other documents. Knowledge of these, both written and spoken, should be important to each Marine because it reminds him or her of the tradition and history of the brotherhood they are a part of, and of his duty to keep true to them.…

Stewardship of the Army Profession and Civilian-Military Relations There are five core characteristics that compose the Army profession; trust, honorable service, military expertise, stewardship, and esprit de corps (Army Doctrine Reference Publication (ADRP) 1, The Army Profession, 2015, p. 6-1). While all are critical to maintaining a healthy Army, stewardship, as described in ADRP 1 chapter 6, is the central tenant I believe keeps the other four alive. Stewardship is the act of taking care of something. Without it, other core values merely come and go. Like a garden that has good soil, light, and water, it will all still wither away without a gardener to routinely provide more water, turn the soil, and prune the plants.…

Colonel Roush explains the constraints and principles by which we must live as military personnel. We must not contradict the President’s expressed desires, must follow regulations and laws as well as use the allocated funding properly as ordered by Congress, must act in accordance with judicial rulings, and must follow the supreme law of the land, including anything expressed in the Constitution and international law. Serving the Constitution is done through following the four sequential principles of the Constitutional Paradigm: following the hierarchy of constitution, mission, service, command, shipmate, self; resolving conflicting loyalties; resigning if loyalties cannot be resolved; disobeying if the situation is egregiously offensive. Simply, the Constitution is our highest loyalty. Dr. Hartle explains the importance of military ethics by emphasizing the commitment to the Constitution and the moral basis of a commission.…
