I consider myself very honored to serve with our nation’s finest young men and women in our Armed Forces. It is a learning experience from many perspectives, the most important one being from a leadership perspective. Communication is the foundation of innovation and just about everything else the organization does, therefore communicating early and often is key in the military. The U.S. military plays an instrumental supporting role in strategic communication. The communication capabilities of today greatly amplifies the impact and speed of change in foreign and domestic public opinion and the succeeding influence on activities of the U.S. government.

Army, changes are necessary and inevitable. Changes to policies and principles have to be communicated to soldiers in a way that effectively alters their attitude and behavior. Changes have to be communicated to the general public as well. To positively influence change, leaders must ensure their messages are reaching intended audiences. Traditional military communication has evolved with time, but there are challenges to effective communication strategies. The pervading notion of who "does" strategic communication is responsible for the structure and composition of groups involved in strategic communication through the new media, such as the Defense Department’s Digital Engagement Team and the State Department's Digital Outreach Team. While both of these undertakings serve as important first steps toward a more comprehensive approach to new media strategic communication, they are largely insulated from the formulation and/or execution of policy or plans (2010 November
