Creating a moral team environment as said before will be essential when coaching for good sportsmanship. Coaches should develop team rules that create boundaries for appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Moreover, coaches should provide explanations that justify their reason for wanting their athletes to behave ethically. Motivating and modeling appropriate behavior has a greater impact than simply telling your athletes to behave. According to Knute Rockne, “one man practicing good sportsmanship is far better than fifty others preaching it.” In basketball, how a coach treats an official could be mirrored by its athletes. If a coach is yelling at an official about the call he or she made, it is likely that the athletes and even fans will mirror the coach’s behavior. Moreover, something as simple as helping an opponent up after a foul shows great sportsmanship.
