Headache is one of the most common primary care visit. The most common type of headaches are tension type headaches, migraines and cluster headaches, which affects 40%, 10% and 1% of the adult population respectively (Hainer & Matheson, 2013). I should have inquired about the photophobia, phonophobia and if aggravated by physical activity because these are the criteria for migraine headache. I should have inquired the length of headache because it helps to distinguish between tension type headache and migraine (Hainer & Matheson, 2013). I should have asked if headache was persistent or episodic and onset is sudden or gradual. This is because migraine last for 4-72 hours and it usually builds up over a period of 1-2 hours, progressed posteriorly and becomes diffuse (Chawla, 2016). …show more content…
Furthermore, subarachnoid hemorrhage, hypertensive emergencies, vertebral artery dissections, and acute angle–closure glaucoma can also present this way (Hainer & Matheson, 2013; Moragas-Garrido & Davenport, 2013). I did not inquire if headache was radiating because in tension headache, pain may be in the scalp, temples, back of the neck, and in the shoulders and not just in one side or one point (Campellone, 2014). I should have inquired about the life stressors, sleep changes, strong odors and diet. All these could be trigger for the headache. I did not ask about the family history of headache. According to the Chawla (2006) 70% of patients have a first degree relative with history of migraine. I should have inquired about hypertension, asthma, and history of heart disease because presence of coexistent conditions might influence treatment choice (Becker et al., 2015).
