Microsoft Project is a project management software program developed and sold by Microsoft, which is designed to assist a project in developing a plan, assigning resources to tasks, tracking progress, managing the budget, and analysing workloads.
Microsoft Project was the company's third Microsoft Windows-based application, and within a couple of years of its introduction it became the dominant PC-based project management software.
While part of the Microsoft Office family, it has never been included in any of the Office suites. It is available currently in two editions, Standard and Professional. Microsoft Project's proprietary file format is .mpp.

The change in direction of other constrain when there is change in one constraint is indicated by the arrow marks as shown above. A project plan is created by balancing these constraints in mind at the beginning of the project. Eventually change happens altering the constraints once the project starts. The role of a project manager is to optimize and control resources necessary for the project and work schedules according to the change of the constraints whereas, a role of management is to control the cost and resource level for the project. The client controls scope, quality and delivery dates. “Scope, quality, and delivery dates suggest a hierarchy for the project manager as solutions to accommodate the changes are sought.” (Wysocki 2011) Project Management is defined as “The application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements” (Project Management Institute 2014). Project Management is a technique to attain result with the available resources and efficient involvement of the stakeholders. The project manager takes the responsibility of completing the project with the above constraints. A project management is an art where a person must be able to accept the change and alter the methods according to the project conditions. Organisations use Project management techniques to carry out their business in a systematic way. Large budgets projects are driven using project management techniques by engineering and construction companies using scheduling and WBS. Organizations like NASA and Department of Defence started using those principles since the 1960s. It was not until 1980s the software companies realised and started to develop the project management practices. By the 1990s, the project management theories, tools and techniques were widely received by different industries and organizations. “Knowingly or unknowingly, people have been using the concept of project management since the early days but the people who have been keeping records about their project work, success and failures regarding their project, shared their results which have set the bases for the project management” (Carayannis, Elias, Young-Hoon, Anbari, Frank 2005, 1).
