Microorganism: Pseudomonas Fluorescens

There were many tests performed on my unknown, which led me to conclude that the unknown microorganism is Pseudomonas fluorescens. When determining the gram reaction of the unknown, a Gram stain was done. This process differentiates between a Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganism. This is done in four steps. The microorganism was stained with iodine, crystal violet, alcohol and acetone, and safranin. Iodine was used first as it acts as a mordant. It forms an insoluble complex by binding with the primary stain. It is then stained with crystal violet. Alcohol and acetone acts as a decolorizer. A distinct feature between both Gram positive and Gram negative is the thickness of their peptidoglycan. A Gram-positive cell would be able to …show more content…
fluorescens is likely to not cause an outbreak in humans. This is because it’s optimum temperature for growth is about 25oC, but it can also grow in temperatures as low as 0oC. This means that it is unable to even survive in the human body to cause any disease. Most hospitals would want to know the identity of the organism that caused an outbreak because it would help them develop a vaccine in the future or a cure for the disease that the organism brings. I would recommend hospitals to encourage their patients to come regularly and do take annual vaccines in order to prevent the pathogen from spreading to others. Based on the information from MicrobeWiki, this microorganism has the ability to suppress plant diseases. (1) For example, diseases caused by Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium ultimum on cotton plants could be inhibited by a specific strain of this microorganism. There are a few tests other than the ones stated above that could be used to confirm the identity of my microorganism. Pseudomonas fluorescens is used as a siderophore to chelate iron when the concentration of iron is low. Whenever the concentration is low, it would show fluorescent pigments under UV light.
