Social work is a profession that supports individuals, groups, and communities in a changing society and create social conditions favorable to the well being of people and society.(Miley Handout) Social welfare is the array of governmental programs, services and institutions designed to maintain the stability and well being of society.(pg 24) Examples of social welfare programs are, but not limited to: Food Stamps or SNAP, Medicaid, SSI(Supplemental Security Income), Section 8 housing, and Pell Grants. Each of these programs aim to help and maintain a livable environment for Americans. It can be one on one, social workers working with clients to help them better their lives in many different ways, or even working with families to overcome problems causing turmoil between each other, whether they are economical or emotional. This way offers a more personal connection so it may also offer many opportunities for the client to share personal stories and truly form a connection with the social worker. Not only is a connection formed but a secure environment of trust and safety is formed around the clients. When it comes to families, the benefit of having a micro level perspective can be extremely beneficial for both sides. The client gets a more direct, personal tailored experience. The social worker can offer programs and/or refer them to organizations or groups that main goal is to help people just them with similar issues. Although microlevel interventions create changes in individual, family, and interpersonal functioning, social workers do not necessarily direct all their efforts a changing individuals themselves. Often, social workers target changes in other systems, including changes in the social and physical environments, to facilitate improvement in an individual or family social functioning. Everyday laws are presented in congress and whether they affect social change or everyday life depends on what is discussed in the law, how it is written, and ultimately implemented. The laws can contain different types of programs or benefits for different people, and may offer something which, later down the line, can help individuals or families in overcoming the struggles of everyday life.
