How did America become the country it is today? The Mexican War started in the year 1846 at the “Texas Side” of Rio Grande. It started after the Mexicans fired upon the Americans on the Rio Grande, and President Polk, the U.S. president at the time, saw it as a reason to go to war. However, was the U.S. really justified in going to war with Mexico? The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico because of the Manifest Destiny, the growing population, and because Mexico provoked America first. One reason the Mexican war was justified was the Manifest Destiny. In document A, John L. O’Sullivan stated that “... hampering our power, limiting our greatness and checking the fulfillment of our Manifest Destiny to overspread the …show more content…
In document A, John L. O’Sullivan stated that, “... Manifest Destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence (God) for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” This evidence shows the U.S. was justified in going to war with Mexico because the U.S.’s population increases every year, and they need more land to provide homes for the new families. A third reason the Mexican War was justified was because the Mexicans provoked America first. In document B, James Polk stated in his war message that, “... Mexico has passed the boundaries of the U.S., has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil.” This evidence shows that the U.S. was justified in going to war with Mexico because they invaded America first and killed Americans on their land. The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico because of the Manifest Destiny, the growing population, and that Mexico provoked them first. All in all, the U.S. was justified to go to war with Mexico for the reasons above. Thanks to the war, Texas is now a state apart of the United States of America. The Mexican War was important whether or not the U.S. was justified or not because the war resulted in the U.S. gaining another state. It is important today because without the war, we may have never gotten Texas, and we wouldn’t have

The United States was not justified going to war with mexico because America just wanted more land, they wanted land due to Manifest Destiny. Americans thought it was a god given right to all of the land in North America, but this meant taking away land from other countries that needed that land more(Doc. C,A, and intro).Americans and Mexicans also couldn’t agree on the border, this could be seen by the president at the time,James Polk, putting forces on what they thought were still on American soil but Mexico thought this of the armed forces being put on their land and after the Mexicans asked them to leave they attacked the Americans, killing 16 Americans, and they went to war (Intro,Doc B,C).America was not justified going to mexico because they just wanted land, this is seen by Americans thinking it was a right to land and not agreeing on the border.…

There are many reasons for why America was justified in going to war with Mexico. The Manifest Destiny stated that the U.S. should own all territory between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, which also meant that the expansion of the U.S. was inevitable and justified. Since Polk was also a very strong believer in the Manifest Destiny, it meant he would fight for the land the U.S. deserved. “Although the United States had no shortage of unoccupied lands, expansionists argued that the republic must continue to grow in order to survive....” This quote states that the Americans were dependent on land because they needed more room for the growing population.…
