Meursault As A Stranger

Decent Essays
Meursault is a stranger to himself and to the society he lives in. Meursault is numb to his life, he does not feel any love, regret, mourn. Meursault is alive, but he acts mechanical. Meursault is unable to control his actions and he acts spontaneously. When Meursault shot the Arab he acted on the spot and shot him six time and claimed that it was “self-defense”. Nonetheless, the Arab was not close enough to cause any harm to Meursault. When he shot the Arab nothing in his life changed, he did not feel anything not even remorse or guilt. When he was placed in his cell and the Arabs asked him what he had done and he said he killed an Arab. Considering that who he told were Arab he did not have any self control, and he just blurted it out as

In The Meursault Investigation, Kamel Daoud, takes off from where Camus’ The Stranger leaves us. He explores the aftermath of that book. While Camus’ story takes place from the point of view of the French in Algeria, Daoud’s story looks at the Arab experience and its result, the main characters wind up in much the same place. It could be that Daoud is telling us that not only are the European and Arabs much alike, there paths will eventually lead them to the same place, despite all their protestations. In this sense Harun is as much the absurd hero as Meursault, despite his attempts to distance himself from that possibility.…

The Man He Killed deals with the uselessness, or pointlessness, of war. It dramatizes a battle scene between two men. It is told from the point of view of an ordinary working-class soldier, who is reflecting on the idea that the man he killed in battle probably had a lot in common with him. He deals with an internal struggle as his thoughts are regretful before he even shoots. The narrator ponders that , he would have befriended the combatant.…

According to Beauvoir, “…evidently, it is necessary to choose to sacrifice the one who is an enemy of man; but the fact is that one finds himself forced to treat certain men as things in order to win the freedom of all.” If the oppressed does not fight against the oppressor, the oppressor will continue to oppress everyone. Therefore, Beauvoir encourages individuals to protect their freedom by any means necessary, including violence. However, I argue that in doing so, the victim may transform into the oppressor and perpetuate violence, hatred, and oppression. Beauvoir states, “We are obliged to destroy not only the oppressor but also those who serve him, whether they do so out of ignorance or out of constraint.”…

“The Stranger” People's actions often heavily reflect the person's character and that is why in my opinion people and their actions are evil not just their behaviors.the quote “Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny.” by Mahatma Gandhi is a good quote on how people's actions reflect character. In the book “ The Stranger “ Meursault is a great example of an evil person. In the first part of the book Meursault says “ Then I fired four more times at the motionless body where the bullets lodged without leaving a trace.”…

Gopnik constantly recalls prior gun incidents like “In Dunblane, Scotland, in 1996,” and “In Quebec,” (Gopnik 695). Not heartless but mature, Cooke does not let his emotions show. Cooke’s emotion and voice is shown in his fiery attitude, “The ‘saves one life’ standard is so self-evidently and inherently absurd…” (Cooke 4). It is hard for authors not to get caught up in emotions, and Cooke’s ability not to do so sets his piece apart from…

Meursault goes to prison and attends a court trial as he is seen as guilty and what makes it worse is the person he is, who sees life as meaningless, increases his chance of being guilty by not knowing why he shot the dead body four more times. He also tells the Magistrate, his lawyer and the chaplain who visits him in prison that he does not believe in God. This makes it hard for him since the court honors God by using a bible as their system to swear to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. He is found guilty and receives a heavy punishment as execution. Meursault doesn’t change one bit throughout the story and his beliefs stay the same as finding life meaningless.…

The two personality traits of psychoticism that Meursault falls under are impulsiveness and irresponsibility. An example of his impulsiveness is when he shot the Arab on the beach; he had no forethought of his actions. He walked along the beach in the scorching heat, and even after he saw the Arab he kept walking because the sun urged him to do so. When he felt his veins bursting through his skin he “couldn’t stand it any longer, and took another step forward” (Camus, 1989) while briefly thinking that he was making a foolish move. Later in the novel during the trial, the Judge wanted to know Meursault’s motives of his crime, and Meursault tried to explain that it was because of the sun (Camus, 1989); the sun gave Meursault the impulse to pull…

How Camus chose Raymond and Salamano as Meursault’s. Raymond is a troublemaker but is important because Meursault becomes friends with him and that is what leads him to go to the beach. Raymond is also the reason the Arab is dead, being that he started the whole conflict with the group of Arabs and their sister. Raymond drags Meursault in his life immediately once he asked Meursault to write the letter to his Arab mistress and Meursault agreed. He was also the one who wanted revenge and had the gun, Meursault took it from Raymond so he did not kill the Arab, ironic.…

The four extra shots fired by Meursault were the result of suppressed emotions from Meursault’s life and especially from his mother’s funeral. This can be supported by many things. When Meursault is dealing with the confusing emotions of his mother’s death, he falls asleep which is a sign of hiding emotions. Also, suppressed emotions can lead to outbursts of anger. If he had properly addressed his emotions, he would have never returned to shoot the Arab four more times.…
