Metaphors In Literature

During trimester one we learned about different skills in literature or also known as Literary terms. For the first trimester we learned over 19 literary terms and they were each different. They were defiantly helpful when we were reading Whirligig but, can these skills be used in other classes? So the first literary term I chose was number four or point of view or POV. There are three types of point of view, 1st person, 2nd person, and 3rd person. 1st and 3rd person are the ones that we mostly focused on in class. Plus there are three types of 3rd person. They are 3rd person limited, 3rd person omniscient, and 3rd person ovjective. 3rd person limited is like having a birds eye view of one person as you watch them go through the book. Simile is when you compare two things with the words like or as. A metaphor on the other hand, metaphor is basically the same thing except you don't use comparison words. There are also two other types of metaphor, extended metaphor and mixed metaphor. Extended metaphor is just what it sounds like. It could be strectched for a whole paragraph or the whole piece of work. Mixed metaphor is when the author uses to many metaphors in a pice of work, to the point wher it becomes confusing. In P.E. it's used a lot during workouts and our unit now which is weight room. For example when you do push ups our teachers say to make our arms flat across like a bench. Or when we do stretches they tell the flexible people you're a human rubber band. I found that's is sometimes used in social studies when comparing sizes of countries and populations. One popular example is Japan is almost as big as the state of California. It's rarely used, but it's used in poetry a …show more content…
Foreshadow and flashback are two antonyms but are kind of the same. Foreshadowing is when the reader uses clues to predict what's going to happen. Flashback is when a story gets interrupted to go to an event from the past. Flashback is pretty common in sci-fi novels like The Maze Runner and the Divergent Series. But flashback rarely occurs in real life. I first noticed foreshadowing in science while doing an experiment. We were doing the mystery liquid lab and we had to make hypothesizes. It's really common in science because your hypothesis is like foreshadowing but there are no clues. Also in art, the pieces that artists create can sometimes be related to a flashback or foreshadow. Usually when art pieces are based on flashback black and white are often used. In foreshadow it's more futuristic and modern

Literary Analysis Point of view is when a reader can know the thoughts, actions, and words from someone’s perspective. For example, there is the first person point of view, where the narrator is the one telling the story from his or her point of view. In the story “Why, You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes, the narrator is telling the story in first person, from his point of view. The narrator tells the reader about his actions, the words he says, and even what he thinks as he relays what happened to him, a stranger he encounters, and an innocent young man. In “Why, You Reckon?”…

In order to understand disability prejudices, we must grasp and understanding of Cresswell notion of “out-of-place-metaphors”. Since millennium, people have been making generalizations about people with disabilities, and a variety of others things including health and the body. Cresswell notion of “out-of-place-metaphors” help us understand the hidden truth behind the metaphors that are being used to describe individuals who are labeled disabled and experiencing other forms of representation. These metaphors were often used to exclude individuals from those who are ‘able’ in society. Throughout this paper I’ll be exploring Cresswell work and Schweik early history of the “ugly laws”.…

When I was young, it was always a competition to be my grandma’s favorite. There were fifteen grandchildren in the family, and being her favorite meant we were given numerous privileges. The privileges consisted of anything from being the one who gets the most money on Christmas, getting to choose the family dinner on every Friday night, or best of all we were allowed to sit next to her at church on Sunday. We were the racecar drivers in a NASCAR race, swerving, causing the cars to smash into the walls to prevent them from the checkered flag. At age four, I was in the middle of the pack, and I knew I had to find something that none of my fellow competitors knew.…

Metaphor represents a relationship between two things suggested through an analogy. For example, the slogan advertised at the end of the COD: Black Ops commercial states, “There is a soldier in all of us”. The advertisers are not necessarily implying that there is an actual soldier inside of us, but rather they are implying that this video game is so much fun that everyone will become “hooked” on it once they play. “In metonymy, a relationship is suggested that is based on association, which implies the existence of codes in peoples minds that enable them to make the proper connections” (25).…

Lakoff and Johnson explicate that “The most fundamental values in a culture will be coherent with the metaphorical structure of the most fundamental concepts in the culture” and “our values are not independent but must form a coherent system with the metaphorical concepts we live by.” Metaphors are then not just expressions used to paint picturesque descriptions; they also reveal a given culture’s values and, perhaps even more importantly, they also “play a central role in the construction of social and political reality.” The authors also state that “Most of our metaphors have evolved in our culture over a long period, but many are imposed upon us by people in power.” The question of who holds the power in a given society is of course…

When creating a form of writing, there are three main perspectives one can write from. These are called first, second, and third person. First person is when one talks about himself using “I, me, my, mine, we, our” and similar words. This is a good perspective to write or talk from when one is telling a story; however, it is not a great idea for professional writing, like a report. Second person is similar to first person, but instead of the author writing about himself, he talks about you.…
