In the era of the Tang dynasty, merchant’s status was high enough because the government supported Buddhism which reinforced feasibility of merchants’ wealth. Yet Song dynasty strongly supported Neo-Confucianism which had the idea of four occupations: the basic strategy of Confucianism which regards merchant activity as the lowest among the scholarly, agricultural, industrial, and mercantile classes. Consequently, although merchants gained the great wealth from trades, they can never reach high social status. In the contrary, Aztec merchants had their own patron god, Yacatecuhtli. As shown in this case, Aztec religion had never restricted merchant and even had the god of merchant. So merchants can reach to the high status below nobles, the same status with warriors. In China, Tang dynasty had strong military power that even they could conquer central Asia. But after adopting Neo-Confucianism enthusiastically, the vast amount of territory of Tang was shrinking quickly in the era of the Song dynasty. The government supported Neo-Confucianism and scholar-gentry classes to rebellions of military leaders, and the funds for equipping new weapons drained to supporting scholarly activities. In addition, scholar-gentry classes often ignored the military leaders. As a consequence, the quality of military declined since there is not qualified arms and resourceful men wanted to be military leaders, and the Song dynasty had to pay tribute to Xixia and Liao dynasties for begging peace. On the other hand, even though Aztec was warrior based society, Aztec’s military skills became a ritual thing. People in Aztec thought that gods are sacrificing themselves to maintain the Universe, so human should repay this debt to the gods. And human sacrifice was considered as the way of compensating the debt. Also, the government which actually held festivals knew the fact that it was effective to keep region, not massacre, to gain victims again and give fear to other neighbors so that Aztec can stabilize the empire too.
