Mercutio's Speech In Romeo And Juliet

Improved Essays
In the fourth scene of the first act in Shakespeare’s famed tragedy Romeo and Juliet, character Mercutio gives a farcical speech in effort to cheer up his friend, Romeo. This speech may seem irrelevant to the plot, for it does nothing to move it forward, nor does it reveal any crucial information about a character, but when analyzed, the speech can be taken as another perspective on the tragic tale of the two star-crossed lovers. In the story, Mercutio and Benvolio decide to take their heart-broken friend to a feast hosted by their enemy. On the way, Romeo explains that he is far too sad to dance. He says, “I am too sore enpierced with his shaft to soar with his light feathers, and so bound” (1.4.19-20). Mercutio laughs at his foolish friend and begins to tease him. Refusing to take part in the banter, Romeo continues to pout. He says that he had a dream that told him it would be a bad idea to come. Mercutio again jests at his friend, saying he had been visited by Queen Mab. In the early parts of the speech, Queen Mab is a pleasant fairy, who travels in “empty hazel nut shell” with “spider’s legs” for spoke wheels (1.4.72, 64). She brings dreams of love to a lover. The imagery Shakespeare uses is pleasant, as though the tale was intended for a child’s ear. However, as the speech goes on, the imagery grows darker and innuendo comes into play. …show more content…
Though dark, it holds truth. Even the simplest of longings are but dreams, and dreams are nothing more than distant fantasies. With his words, Mercutio shows us the way he sees the world. His beliefs are of a different brand than the ones that drive Romeo’s love or Tybalt’s hate. Mercutio does not accept the social norm that the long-standing feud between Capulet and Montague has created. In fact, he pokes holes in all of it. Every belief of every character in this famed tragedy is nothing more than the product of a quiet mind in his

In this essay I will be exploring how Shakespeare illustrates the theme of love in Romeo and Juliet with particular reference to Act one scene five and Act two scene two. The play has multiple types of love shown throughout, however in this piece I will be focusing on Romantic love, more specifically, the love between Romeo and Juliet. I find this category of love to often be more vividly expressed in writing, with the use of additional poetic techniques. Act one begins with Romeo seeing Juliet for the first time. He, almost comedically, forgets about Rosaline entirely.…

In the 16th century tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses metaphor and diction, aimed at Tybalt and the 2 families, to reveal Mercutio’s own negative tone/attitude behind his outlook on those whom he had blamed for his death. For example, after Mercutio had been fatally struck from a sword blow by Tybalt in swords dual, Mercutio realizes he is going to die from being stabbed by Tybalt, and says “ I am peppered, I warrant, for this world. A plague o' both your houses! Zounds, a dog, a rat, a mouse, a cat to scratch a man to death! A braggart, a rogue, a villain that fights by the book of arithmetic!”…

Mercutio’s said Queen Mab for a good reason, not just to show his intelligence, but to unveil his view on love to his friends while at the same time make, fun of Romeo and his endless love problems. Expressed through a variety of poetic devices, Mercutio’s main argument is how love can appear really good at first, but turns out to be completely false and ugly. Mercutio begins by describing Mab as “Queen Mab” giving us the impression that she has great respect. However, the queen Shakespeare intended was not that of royalty, but that of sex. Then Mercutio goes on to tell that this prostitute gallops over people while they sleep and change their dreams.…

The first scene is set at a gas station, opening to 3 young men pulling in after a fast ride on the highway in their bright yellow topless car. A shoot out soon ensues, requiring a swat team and a helicopter to break up. Another scene portrays a boy by his lonesome on a beach, writing love poetry as he finishes a cigarette. A third scene introduces a party following an ecstasy-induced drug trip, and later a request to elope is placed with a tattooed ‘friar’ who wears Hawaiian shirts beneath his robes. Surely a description as such (albeit a true description) could not reveal the ever-popular tale the production recounts; surely, one could not guess that these are scenes from a re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.…

The Queen Mab speech is a one of the most famous speeches in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The Queen Mab speech is about a little fairy who supposedly visits one while one’s are sleeping. In the first half of the speech Mercutio characterizes Queen Mab and one can now create a picture in one's head of what she looks like. Shakespeare included the speech in the play because it provides comic relief as well as the speech has many literary devices in it. This excerpt alludes to the god of desire, affection, and love; Cupid. Mercutio is trying to persuade Romeo to dance as if he was in love, similar to the the winged Cupid. Opposingly, Romeo responds that he can't because he’s so much in love that it's weighing him down and making him unhappy. Without this allusion, the reader would have a difficult time analyzing Romeo's feelings toward love. This can illustrate how allusions may not always be in comparison with the author's writing, but procuring a contrasting view that emphasized the difference between the mythological god and…
