The Mentoring Freshman Project is about helping new incoming freshman, giving them advice and making sure that they go down a good path for the four years of high school. My experience mentoring a freshman was a very good, I felt like an adult , I was honored to be there and talk to a freshman about everything that’s going to happen in high school. My freshman’s name was Monica and she is 14 years old, she said that she likes to play sports and her favorite sport is basketball, and her favorite subject is History. She said that she wants to be a nurse when she graduates. She was very shy and pleased to meet me, I was glad that I got to talk to a freshman and give her some great ideas of what being a senior is like, and what high school …show more content…
They really inspire me to want to do everything that I could to graduate, they just came and gave us ideas of what we might go through when high school is over. It was a very good experience to talk to the teachers and get to know them, they made me feel like I could do whatever I want in life and no matter how many mistakes I make I will still go for it, just like they did. One of the teachers said to make mistakes in life but make sure that you don’t make too many that you can’t fix. I understand that teachers went through a lot in their high school life, but they manage to get back on their feet and keep on pushing, like Mrs. Ramirez story really stood out to me. She had a tough childhood and she was not doing too many great things, she was not so great in school, and even all that her parents didn’t even care, her mom didn’t want her to have a good education or a great future. Ms. Ramirez ended up having to go to community college, she messed up in highschool but she got her life on track and transferred into a four year university. She majored in mathematics and ended up becoming a math

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

The group project with my fellow group members Avery Ezell, DaShawn Gilliam and Ayaka Matsunaga was a success. Our topic focused on mentoring where we decided to partner with the Wicomico Mentoring Project in Salisbury, Maryland. The project provides “adult role models who volunteer to work with students to improve their grades, attendance and behaviors” (Wicomico County Public Schools). The coordinator Mark Thompson was more than glad to become our mentor to help our group make an impact on his organization. In addition, Professor Melany Trenary was a part of the project where she became another mentor.…

One focus should be cost/benefit. We must remain cognizant of financial implications with any program development. Another important aspect is the effectiveness and efficiency of the program. We do not want to implement a program that is designed to fail or provides limited personnel development. The idea of a mentoring program is to provide leadership development for our personnel; not only should we develop personnel in leadership positions currently, but all personnel.…

We believe that if we mentor 6th and 7th grader through their ups and downs to be sure they have a better experience than we did in middle school . Our outcome is to improve behavior, stop bullying, and higher self-esteem. We decided to make to do a mentoring program because we wanted to give the 6th and 7th graders a chance that we didn’t have at their age. We always wanted to start a mentoring program at HLSG but we were turned down on the idea when we first presented it.…

The one aspect I found interesting of the reading was when it talked about “mentoring on the run”. What I found interesting about mentoring on the run was the fact that mentoring does not necessarily mean occurring in a formal, one-to-one matching program. Rather, mentoring can happen on an everyday basis by surrounding students with a “community of mentors” all of whom are linked in an informal network or web…

A peer mentor is defined as a person who uses their resources to support, encourage and inform someone. Going into this semester, I was unaware that I would be mentoring another student and thus doubted my abilities. Although I was excited to become a mentor, I questioned whether I would truly be able to make a difference in someone’s life. The difference that I wanted to make could be as simple as helping someone ace a test, but the news of mentoring threw me off track. Nonetheless, I gathered myself and tried to maintain a positive attitude.…

I originally thought that by just being there for someone you were a mentor. I now know through this program that mentoring involves giving both tools and advice to effectively help your mentee. The relationship with a mentee is somewhat different than a relationship between friends. There is a sort of bond that occurs from helping the student but the student holds you to higher standards than a friend would. I am excited about mentoring next semester because I want to hone my mentoring skills even further be able to help my mentees in a more effective way.…

Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…
