Mentoring: A Case Study

1. As a DNP practitioner in a leadership role, discuss various methods that you would use to teach EBP in an effort to emphasize active participation by the learners to the greatest extent possible. Evidence shows that students learn more when they engage in active participation rather than just listening and memorizing (Stanford University, n.d.). Some of the methods that emphasize participation include: small-group seminars, presentations integrated with clinical practicum and journal clubs (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015). Small-group seminars are a great opportunity for hands-on practice. For instance, students can bring questions from their own practices to be answered during the seminar. With this tactic, students will see that the search of evidence is useful on everyday situations (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015). However, small-group seminars need a skillful teacher that will guide students. …show more content…
Describe successful characteristics of a mentoring program and the benefits of mentoring for both mentors and mentees. A successful mentoring program must start with the right clinicians to function as mentors. The selected clinicians must have an expert level of knowledge, a positive attitude, enthusiasm and excellent listening and communication skills (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015). The mentor’s objective is to develop clinicians that value patient care. EBP mentors must aim to create a sustainable change in clinicians (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015). Multiple studies have shown that mentoring programs have a positive influence in mentors and mentees (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015). Mentees have a one-to-one assistance, and they reported an increased in problem solving skills and confidence. Also, mentees report that they increased their network of contacts. Mentors, on the other hand, enhance their self-awareness and interpersonal skills. Lastly, mentors also report that they developed their political skills (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt,

The one aspect I found interesting of the reading was when it talked about “mentoring on the run”. What I found interesting about mentoring on the run was the fact that mentoring does not necessarily mean occurring in a formal, one-to-one matching program. Rather, mentoring can happen on an everyday basis by surrounding students with a “community of mentors” all of whom are linked in an informal network or web…

What is a mentor? There are so many different interpretations of what a mentor is and who a mentor should be. The definition of a mentor that I find most fitting is a person who works with someone or others in a positive, constructive way so that both the mentor and the protégé have the potential to grow through the relationship. The person I chose for this project is Alex Carter. She is a junior in her second semester of nursing school and a friend of mine who has helped me prepare for the intensity of Austin Peay’s Nursing Program.…

As everyone talks about how amazing the Technology Management Program is at UCSB, I could not agree more and now fully understand what they mean and thoroughly enjoy these classes. I am excited to be able to apply our TMP 111 speaker’s ideas and advice to my day to day life in the present as well as influencing my decisions and choices for the rest of my life. The thing I enjoyed most about the speakers were their ability to relate back to us college students, and provide a realistic example that what we are doing right now directly impacts our future. Three principles I am taking away with me from this class correlate to motivation; because I have a small idea of what career path I want to follow but not a great amount of confidence I can get…

Mentoring is a reciprocal and collaborative learning relationship between two individuals with mutual goals and shared accountability for the success of the relationship. The mentor is the guide, expert, and role model who helps develop a new or less experienced mentee. In many instances, mentoring is a spontaneous relationship that develops between two people. However, mentoring can also be successful when the mentor and mentee are paired or matched intentionally.…

Interviews were transcribed by the authors. Results in this study showed that six themes related to mentors’ perceptions of their roles of serving: mentor qualities, intensive time commitment, caseload, involvement in multiple contexts, close relationship with youth, and challenges. The roles and their challenges described presented that their roles as mentors are intensive, involved, and demanding. The study concluded, as the results indicated, that a mentor who uses a professional, experienced mentoring model may hold promise for working with youth at high risk. The role, the conceptualizations, and the organizational culture of the mentors’ work may be important in…

The chapters covering “It’s a Jungle Gym, Not a Ladder” and “Are You My Mentor?” cover career building and processes used to climb the corporate ladder. The title of the Jungle Gym chapter was taken from a quote by Fortune Magazine editor Pattie Sellers, who said "The most successful people I know don’t think of their career as a ladder. But rather, a jungle gym. People who view their careers as jungle gyms, rather than ladders, make sure that their vision is always peripheral so that they can see opportunities that come along—and swing to them.”…

Introduction I chose to write about the Christian discipline of mentoring because of its importance. Jesus said “Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all nations,” Mark 28:19 Christian discipling is mentoring people young and old about the gospel and teaching them how to live above reproach. Mentoring is the main way that people of all classes come to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ whether it is a pastor doing the mentoring or a ley person. Summarise your original understanding of the discipline before the course started My understanding of mentoring before the course started was not as in-depth as it is now. Our pastor has been mentoring myself and and my wife during the course.…

Good mentoring leads to action: if mentoring is to be purposeful and effective for the mentee, it must surely not only define actions desirable but actually entail their execution. The mentee must not only know what to do and how to do it but be motivated to do so. For this reason mentoring should not be terminated before action has been taken; and may lead to it being measurable or valued, by its…

Toyota Motor Corporation, one of the most successful companies in the world. It has the glorious history of 80 years, only a few of the peers can defeat it. Toyota is not just a huge business organization but it is also the second family for those employees. Agreed to Gary Johns, “Organization is social inventions for achieving goals through the group efforts” and Toyota as one of the examples of the successful organization, for sure the top management team had put a lot of effort in managing and training their employees to accomplish how to shape a better team behavior and emphasize the importance of teamwork. To describe a human being, you would have to pick many qualities in order to truly paint a solid picture of a person. You can describe them and the subject might say “yes that sounds like me” but the reality is that we probably missed something. This is a really tough situation to be in and you could either insult someone because you missed something about them or they could think you do not really know them. Now imagine having to do it on yourself. You will read about how I am a mentor, how I am a hard worker, and last but not least how resilient I am.…

Teachers enter the profession with various levels of readiness and continue to learn on the job, especially in the beginning years. However, almost half of all beginning teachers will leave their classroom within the first five years of their teaching career (Phillips & Ingersoll, 2015). One factor contributing to this statistic is that many new teachers are not involved in a formal mentoring program (Grossman & Davis, 2012). This rings true for Tuscaloosa County School System. New teachers in Tuscaloosa County Schools participate in new teacher training that only consists of monthly meetings focused mainly on professionalism.…
