I felt stress could best be portrayed through narration because stress, the monster, torments from within the brain. It is a mental illness that lives on the inside, eating away at one’s happiness and emotional well-being. In coming at stress from this angle, I was able to show just how a monster isn’t always a creature, a being, or a vicious beast. Sometimes, we are the monsters, torturing ourselves with these thoughts. My goal was to showcase how stress, anxiety, and depression are not easily defeated. They are very real illnesses, and they should not be avoided by anyone suffering. Stress can alter a person’s life. It can affect the way they hold relationships, operate, work, and produce in society. The movie aimed to show how stress isn’t necessarily a visible monster, but it is still a monster nonetheless. He is then faced with the monster of stress. This monster infiltrates his mind, dictating his feelings, emotions, and ability to interact with others. The thoughts essentially follow him as he works, as he studies, as he eats, walks, and maneuvers throughout his day. He can never escape no matter where he goes or where he hides. As he returns home, the essay still isn’t finished. The thoughts are still labeling him “unworthy, unintelligent, unattractive, and incapable.” He becomes overwhelmed by the voice’s presence, so he storms out of his seat and heads to his friend’s room. In this room, he begins to talk about stress. He mentions how stress is a monster that is ruining his life, consuming him from within. During this conversation, he realizes the only way to defeat this monster is to talk, speak up, and face stress head on. This sparks an idea for his essay; he will talk about stress. He will finally face the monster. As the monster tries to stop him from overcoming, he sets down his laptop and begins to type. This time it is his voice doing the talking, speaking up about stress, what it is, and how it can be beaten. As he finishes the essay, he sits back, takes a deep breath, and knows that stress has now been conquered. Thus, the movie shows that stress is a monster from within. It is something that follows you everywhere
