A person is considered to be mentally healthy if he is emotionally, psychologically and socially fit. According to Wakefield (2005), the only way to fully understand the concepts of function, dysfunction, and disorder is through natural selection. It is through national selection that people are now able to understand how species change over time (SparkNotes, 2015). However, one perspective brought about by evolution is mental disorder. Evolutionary psychology explains why there are genetic variations which result in disease for some (Neese, 2005). The most profound contribution of this study is the strong foundation in understanding how behaviors are regulated in order to achieve people’s several goals in life amidst its conflicting tasks. Psychological disorders are considered to be an adaptive functioning because the latter is the means through which a person demands in life and how independent they can become. However, when adaptive functioning is extreme, it is considered abnormal (Neese, 2005). Abnormal conditions are characterized by excess positive or deficient negative emotions (Neese, 2005). In order to know that there is an abnormal phenomenon in a certain individual, it must be taken into consideration whether such abnormality is harmful or …show more content…
One of these disorders is anxiety. Anxiety involves the feeling of worry, nervousness, or uneasiness. It is anxiety which illustrates the diversity of the body and its regulatory mechanisms (Neese, 2005).
