This report is about the film “Memoirs of a Geisha” which portrays the life of Chiyo, a young Japanese girl, who was sold to a geisha house, in Kyoto in the 1930s because of her family’s financial difficulties. Her geisha training is almost near to the life of slavery. Chiyo finds herself working as a maid to a despiteful geisha naming Hatsumomo. Chiyo’s unique beauty attracted Hatsumomo’s jealousy. Hatsumomo then made little Chiyo’s life miserable. One day, as Chiyo weeps by the stream somewhere in the city, a wealthy man, known as the Chairman, together with some geisha, stopped and comforted her. She is also known to be Hatsumomo’s rival in Kyoto. She is a kind but clever geisha. She takes Sayuri and guided to her on how to become a geisha as a favor to the Chairman. She is a practical woman, believing that love for a geisha is an impossible dream.
Pumpkin
She grew up with Sayuri in the okiya. She is benevolent but dumb. But she is very determined to become a geisha. She is under Hatsumomo’s mentorship. Unfortunately, she acquired some of Hatsumomo’s cruelty. She became a prostitute for years during the World War II. She tried to destroy Sayuri’s relationship with the Chairman for her to get back at Sayuri for succeeding where she herself failed.
Mother or Ms. Nitta She only cares about herself. She runs the okiya where Sayuri, Pumpkin and Hatsumomo live. She hides her unpleasing physical appearance with heavily applied makeup and colorful silk kimono. She adopted Sayuri right after Dr. Crab paid money in exchange for Sayuri’s virginity.
Satsu Sakamoto She is Sayuri’s older sister. She was sold to a whorehouse since she was less pretty and less clever compared to her younger sister, Sayuri. She dislikes her life as a prostitute, so she ran way, leaving her little sister behind.
