On August, 22, 2016, a constituent wrote to Senator Donnelly’s office asking for assistance in notifying Hoosiers and Americans of the psychiatric symptoms associated with the medication mefloquine. Mefloquine is an antimalarial medicine that is available as a generic medication and used to be sold under the brand name Lariam. Mefloquine can be prescribed for either treatment or prevention of malaria. It is available in the United States by prescription only. People with psychiatric conditions including active depression, a recent history of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia, and other major psychiatric disorders should not take mefloquine.
