Faith and reason disbelief
During the thirteenth century there was a new state of confidence in, which a relationship is formed between faith and reasoning. Abelard a philosopher and theologian at the time took this to his advantage. At a young age he began to strive to learn philosophy, once he learned all he could from a school he would move on to the next. Until there was no one wise enough to teach him, therefore he started his own school. His new teachings and belief would be his downfall because of the false confidence people held when it came to faith and reason. Alberic and Lotulphe brought Abelard book of the holy trinity of God, to the attention of the Archbishop, which led to the continuous downfall of Abelard life. Geoffroi, Bishop of Chartres says during Abelard’s trial ‘above all that we have found nothing in this book of his that lies before us whereon any open accusation can be based…” however, Abelard is still found guilty.” There is no actual evidence to persecute Abelard for any crimes against the church, yet he still faces a sentence of having to burn his books and be confined to a monastery. The reason for this occurrence is that the idea of faith and reason were said to be accepted in this present time, but in actuality this right was still denied. The church and other religious leaders could find his work undermining since it says something in a different manner in, which they were accustomed to learning and understanding scripture. This would go against the foundation of old teaching of scripture because it gives a reader a different way of looking at the material.
