One of the easiest ways to prevent medication administration errors is by following the five rights: the right patient (which requires at least two patient identifiers), the right drug, the right dose, the right route, and the right time. There are also three checks in medication administration: check the medication when it is pulled from the dispensing machine, check the medication when preparing to administer the medication, and the final check occurs at the bedside before the medication is given. Performing an independent double check will also ensure the correct dosage is being administered.
