Diversity paper Diversity The meaning of “Diversity” isn’t just about how individuals represent more than one origin, race, and religion. To me being diverse means accepting and respecting people for who they are, and not judging them based on their appearance. Each person is unique in their own way and every person will have their own individual differences. We have to accept one another. I think it would be good to explore other people’s heritage and culture in a positive manner and environment. It is good to learn and take in other cultures and religions. Nurses make a positive difference everyday by providing the best care and quality they can. In order to provide quality care workplaces need to embrace diversity among the healthcare professionals. The quest to promote a multicultural workplace starts with self-awareness and diversity awareness. Diversity awareness is very important for providing patient care. By providing culturally incongruent care can undesirably affect the patient and their safety. In Clarke’s nursing program we are challenged and taught to learn the culture of nursing education. It is crucial as a nurse to develop your own cultural competence. It is important to understand that diversity is not static it is always changing. Also a thorough cultural assessment should be done on the patient so you can be familiar with their own beliefs and practice so you can provide the best care possible. By being culturally competent and having respect for others is a very important nursing practice, since as a nurse you are a patient advocate. It will help them once they get older so they will have some experience already. They will have respect for one another either same or different from them. The seek for diversity awareness to me starts at a young age. As you grow up I think you should be exposed to it early, so once you grow older you than can teach others and learn from others and already be aware of it.
