Moving to a foreign country can be difficult especially for the main character who was expected to understand and be able to communicate with the natives successfully immediately after moving to France. The professor in the story makes all of her pupils feel lesser of an individual. The professor is rude and hateful to all of her students along with the main character. Although he is working to learn French, he felt as if the public didn’t accept him due to his lack of communication and only felt comfort knowing he wasn’t alone in this feeling. The author states, “My only comfort was the knowledge that I was not alone. Huddled in the smoky hallways and making the most of our pathetic French, my fellow students and I engaged in the sort of conversation commonly overheard in refugee camps.” (Sedaris 25:1&2) Something like this would make you want to give up and go home, although our character did
