The United States' political policies during the Cold War caused an increase in anti-Communist sentiment in the United States following WWII because causes such as McCarthyism led to there being a dislike towards Communism and a national anti-Communist sentiment. During the time after the conclusion of World War II, there was a rip in the European region, with there being dozens of countries whose entire economies and societies had been leveled by the amount of bloodshed that had occurred during the war. Many of the greatest powers of Europe, including France, Italy, and the United Kingdom had to rebuild almost everything in order to return to their power and status. The ideology and the actual doings of the policies that Joseph McCarthy was in support of and leading were met with support and stigma from the people of the United States who were glad that there was something being done, actively, about the spread of communism, even though the claims of McCarthy were somewhat radical. It was due to this that the American people were put into a craze of the fear of communism infiltrating the highest levels of government that created such a strong anti-Communist sentiment amongst the American people at the time, following World War II.
