McCandless and Shepard both proved their self reliance but the dissimilarities are remarkable. McCandless pushed himself to every limit to prove his independency wasn't relied on superficial desires, ¨I don't want to know what time it is,´ Alex declared cheerfully. ¨I don't want to know what day it is, or where I am. He wanted to break away from the comforts of his home and experience life completely unfiltered, “So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservation, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality, nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit.” (Into The Wild ). I believe McCandless was idiotic in the sense of the way he approached his journey but McCandless proved his mission successful by demonstrating his independence and survival skills throughout the years, while Shepard did not actually prove Ereichnrights´s point wrong which was the whole point of project.
