Throughout my time observing Mrs. Botta 1st grade classroom at Mayfield Elementary, I learned about what means to be a teacher. Over the few weeks of two hour sessions, I was able to build a strong relationship with Mrs. Botta and her eleven students. Witnessing Mrs. Botta teach language arts, math, and good ethics enlighten me to how demanding being a teacher truly is.
Mayfield Elementary implements several daily sessions of spelling, reading, and comprehension in their first grade classrooms. Beginning with Response to Intervention, also referred to as RTI, Mrs. Botta’s students dispersed to other classrooms to receive concentrated help in language arts, math, or enrichment activities. In the meantime, four students from other classes came to Mrs. Botta for help in language arts. Since I received similar training in the spelling, writing, and reading skills that Mrs. Botta implemented, I enjoyed watching the knowledge I learned being used in a classroom. Once her eleven students returned, Mrs. Botta taught reading, comprehension, and writing skills to her own students. Occasionally, a guest came to read a short story. Botta teaches her students how to logically solve math equations. Since I have been in higher maths for some time, I have forgotten how meticulous it once was to simply add. After a short lesson, Mrs. Botta broke the children into groups where they proceeded to visit each station she had erected. During each seven minute game-like activity, the kids played with numbers instead of drugging through a worksheet. Often when the children asked me for assistance with their equations, I presented the students with leading questions, helping them discover the answer on their own.
