Mayella Ewell is a white woman in the 1930s, woman were not seen as equals in this time period. Woman were not respected in society like they are now so a lot has changed since then.
Being did have its benefits because of the Jim Crow Laws white woman were protected from black men. They could about do anything to a black person and get away with it and it really wasn't fair. Thats another reason Tom went to prison the people of Maycomb were not going to let a black man win in court over a white woman. The people on the jury would become outcast and would never be accepted into society if they did that. So mayella achieved some of her power through her race her being white helped her alot in court. The only downfall mayell had from her gaining power was her class she had less money than . most black people. She was the poorest of the poor and she most of the time ranked below the blacks. If she had come from a rich white family she would have been unstoppable there probably would not have been a trial.
