The Mayak Cohorts is a study of workers who lived in a closed city of Ozyorsk in Russia. It benefites from a stable population. In addition to that excellent dose records have been kept. Regular medicals occur with smoking and alcohol data recorded. 3 Cohorts were set up ; plant workers; residents living near the Techa river; offspring of the local Techa river population. ICRP Update
It was necessary to update ICRP 60 to ICRP 103 as the Life Span Study had an extra 10 plus years of follow up. In the early 1990’s Hiroshima Tumour registry became available. Cancer survival rates over the last 25 years have significantly increased. Incidence data can now provide a better description of cancer burden.

Chronic exposures
• This take place over a long period of time.
• This is usually referring to low level exposures.
Types of Radiation Effects Somatic effects
• These occur in the exposed person in the form of Deterministic effects or Stochastic effects. Hereditary effects
• These occur in the future generations of the exposed person.
Deterministic effects
Based on a considerable number of experiments involving animals and various other researches mentioned previously e.g. Life Span Study, it was discovered that severity of certain effects on human beings will increase with increasing doses. There is a specific level, the “threshold”, these effects will only occurs above a threshold dose – below the threshold dose there is no effect. Once you exceed the threshold, the severity of the effect is proportional to the dose received i.e. the larger the dose the greater the effect.
This is illustrated in the graph below
