Throughout the play a major theme is how the town has grown from the murder of Matthew Sheppard. There are so many different programs, theme nights and even projects done at the university to make people feel more comfortable. On campus Catherine said how the symposium for social justice changed to the Shepard Symposium for Social Justice. She was explaining how this was a big change for the university and it welcomed kids from all over to come and learn about justice and social change. Jim Osborne also said how there is a Rainbow Resource center on the campus and the school also added more gender and sexuality classes. A lot of people in the town of Laramie are tired of this horrible event that occurred and want to just move on with their lives. Jim Osborne stated, “There are a lot of folks who simply didn’t want to talk about Matthew Shepard anymore (pg. 116)”. A lot of people want to forget about the hideous crime that occurred where they live and simply cannot believe it happened. The rental car agent has the same view, “Well, I wish you luck with your project, but I do think it’s time to let the boy go (pg. 120)”. His view is whatever Matthew did it is none of his business and it does not really concern him. Dev Thomsen has the same view but looks at it differently, “You know, we’re trying to put this behind us, and keep going. You have brutality and you deal with it, and you move on (pg. 122)”. Deb understands it is such a horrible crime but in the end what can anyone do, they just have to move on. There were some people who did not want the newspapers to be delivered to their house until after the story was out of it. “Some callers have requested that their paper delivery be held during the week that the series of stories was being published (pg. 139)”. These kinds of people were completely tired of hearing the story and they wanted to continue their normal routines without being reminded of it.
