The purpose of this paper is to articulate how “Legacy Leader” General James Mattis influenced me. Mattis’ earned the nickname “Warrior Monk” for his compassion and willingness to do what is necessary to win. His message of balancing thought and action, impacted service members across all services and helped me define the legacy I would like to leave.

Therefore, Mattis dedicated a large portion of staff to monitor Iran’s growing threat nexus while we operated in Iraq and Afghanistan. He often pressured Congress for the support necessary to protect the country and service members.

Mattis’ intellect, steadfast demeanor, selflessness, and proactive nature influenced me to emulate his style of leadership. Working under General Mattis, I felt empowered to focus on threats to the country without waiting for a catastrophe. His leadership reaffirmed that my personal leadership philosophy was not outdated or ineffective. I am less concerned with reprisal for actions and comments that I make for the benefit of my soldiers. My battles with civilian staff, to empower my NCOs, is an example of his influence and its impacted on me as a leader.
