Mathari Hospital was established in 1904 as a smallpox isolation centre, later it became known as the lunatic Asylum. In 1924, it was renamed Mathari Mental Hospital, later the name was changed to Mathari Hospital in 1964, currently it is called Mathari Teaching and Referral Hospital. Mathari Hospital is Kenya’s sole National referral and teaching psychiatric Hospital Olwendo, W. M., (2015), it offer services to those suffering from a wide range of psychiatric disorders. In 1978, the maximum security unit was opened for law offenders with mental illness. Our approval for interns were verified and we were introduced to six Nazarene University student. We were taken around the premises. This lasted for almost three hours. The places we visited were includes the wards, the clinic, comprehensive care centre, rehabilitation unit, psychotherapy unit, maximum security unit, radiology department, biomedical engineering, remand, forensic unit, mortuary, maintenance department, dealing with outpatient. I was challenged by varied behaviours from the client, at the same time I noted the comprehensive manner in which the hospital was catering to each individual. The nurses were busy with their medical work, psychologists and counsellors with their work, social workers, the watchmen, and the police were all busy carrying out their duties.
We were introduced to our supervisors, three in number. Naomi (supervisor) explained to us what was expected of us during our practicum period. She instructed us to submit our reports every Monday to enable her track each intern.
The experience was encounter, but I am ready to face the challenges and learn from the institution. I believe there is a lot to learn in Mathari Hospital.
WEEK TWO
We joined a group session in CSAT, this group comprised of clients who had been admitted to the hospital due to various types of addiction. The group gathered every Tuesday to share about their progress. The meeting was well attended and many of the clients were present. It was a good opportunity to learn and experience the power of support exhibited by members. We knowledgeable group dynamics a mong members for example some clients felt that they were much better than others and did not need to be in the group but to have individual therapy.
