The first article analyzed a correlation between maternal mental illness and children's long-term safety and stability. To complete the analysis researcher used a multi-sector administrative dataset was used from both the Department of Social Services and the Department of Mental Health. The sample size used consisted of 4,895 low-income families. The low-income families were both mother and child initially reported to child welfare in 1993 or 1994. The families were used until March 2009. Moreover, mothers, were identified as having a mental illness if they met the criteria for several things such as 1) she received services from public or private contract agency reimbursed through Medicaid, or other DMH funds, 2) if she was diagnosed with a mental illness such as schizophrenic disorders, episodic mood disorders, anxiety disorders and dissociative disorders and personality disorders.
