With the abundance of every possible item surrounding people, they have lost focus of their surroundings and continue to race towards materialistic wealth. Scott Leuthold writes, “The plague of our materialistic society is a direct result of mankind seeking satisfaction and happiness through the addiction to obtaining objects of our outward desires. When people see posts about someone in need they often share it instead of donating. They do this because they think that by sharing, they could help more and shine light upon that issue. “The more people who appear to be available to help, the less likely any one of them will help. If you consider that social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter resemble massive online rooms full of people, they present the perfect conditions for the bystander effect to take hold. Most of us have hundreds of Facebook friends, surely someone will step up and offer aid, right? Considering so many of them are posting about the issue it’s not an unreasonable assumption, but when everyone assumes the same thing, nobody ends up doing anything” (Dao). This says that people on social media sites often share instead of offering help. It means that people nowadays choose to become bystanders instead of helping out with a certain issue. This is very similar to the murder of Kitty Genovese. Thirty seven people either saw or heard Kitty, but no one did anything because they thought someone else would step in and help. In the modern technological world thing haven’t changed. People still rely on others to donate and help out instead of taking charge and helping out themselves. When people repost or share something, they just invite others to become bystanders. The more people are seeing an issue, the less likely anyone would help.
