Unit 1 and 2 – Mastery Negotiation 1: Planning for a Negotiation
A negotiation is a form of decision making in which two or more parties talk with one another in an effort to resolve opposing interests. The process require give and take on the both sides, and can be very complex. It is necessary to prepare and develop a strategy in order to experience successful outcomes to a negotiation and come to a mutual agreement that benefits all parties.
Upcoming Negotiation
Recently, Ruth Watkins, who is the art teacher at Salado Intermediate and Middle School where I am a substitute teacher, approached me with a wonderful opportunity. She asked if I would consider taking over her position as the art teacher beginning in January of 2017. She explained

She was very impressed with my knowledge of art, the outcome of the projects, and the feedback she received from students and other teachers about my handling of the class while she was gone. Therefore, she has decided that I am the number one candidate for the position and would like to approach the superintendent about hiring me as a temporary teacher until I receive my teaching certificate in May 2017. After which time, I might be hired as the permanent art teacher beginning the 2017-2018 school year. I substitute almost daily at the school, and know the children and teachers very well. My own children attend the school, and I am very happy working there. Becoming a permanent teacher for the art program is a wonderful opportunity if it comes to fruition. The issue that I will need to address and negotiate if they offer me the temp teaching position in January will be my salary. The problem I am facing is that technically they would be hiring as a permanent sub until a certified a teacher can be hired. Long term substitutes receive $90 a day, however, I would be taking on the classroom for more than five months and in essence be a “temporary teacher” performing all the duties of a full-fledged teacher. Furthermore, I already hold an associates of science in graphic design, will attain my teaching certificate during the time I am subbing, and complete my bachelor’s …show more content…
They will not have to dedicate man-hours and money toward finding another teacher for the 2016-2017 school year. For me, it is a wonderful opportunity that will increase my income, allow me to work where my children are in school, and love what I would be doing.
Planning for My Negotiation
I will use the integrative negotiation process which requires me to identify what my goals are in order to focus my strategy, identify the needs and interests of both parties, generate alternative solutions, and evaluate those alternatives and select among them to determine my BANTA. (Lewicki, 2015) I have identified the conflict/problem which is the issue of salary and determination of title, long term substitute or temporary teacher. The tactics I will employ are based in my specific power in the negotiation. I have informational/knowledge, relationship, and personal power in the negotiation and will use these powers to help make a clear case for my argument and close the deal. (Lewicki,
