A Surveillance Society In the article Surveillance Society by William E. Thompson, there are imperfect ways to spy on citizens around the world. The government is finding ways to use surveillance to notice what is going on around the world. But some actions that they've taking lately aren't really "protecting ones privacy. " It can be many ways that unsolved crimes could be solved so increasing all the technology in the world can be safe and unsafe.…

Post 9/11 Privacy Rights: The Case Against Electronic Surveillance In response to concerns about terrorism after the attacks on September 11,2001, the government of the United States enacted new guidelines for conducting surveillance on the public. This paper will discuss the implementation of electronic surveillance as a tool to combat terrorism and will make the case against sweeping electronic surveillance of American citizens and others in this country. Various examples of increased surveillance along with decreasing privacy right will help the reader to conclude that these tactics have not reduced incidents of any type of crime, including terrorism. This paper will also discuss several types of electronic surveillance, including the collection of metadata from telephone records, which intruded on the private lives of citizens and did not increase their safety in any meaningful way.…
The problem isn't surveillance -- it's surveillance without adequate oversight and targeting. National security could be preserved by a program, which also respects our civil rights.…
Who, What, When, Where and Why am I Being Watched In George Orwell’s 1984 and Phillip K. Dick’s “Minority Report” the governments are obsessed with surveillance of their people in order to keep their control over their citizens. Thus their citizen’s privacy suffered to the point where it is nonexistent. With the assistance of technology, the governments are able to keep citizens oppressed and Orwell and Dick openly express their negative views on government surveillance. 1984 is a story written in the 1940s that shows what England would look in a totalitarian government.…
The attacks on September 11, 2001 instilled great fear in the government as well as millions of Americans. In order to protect ourselves and prevent future terrorists attacks, President George W. Bush signed a bill called The USA Patriot Act which allowed government agencies such as The National Security Agency access to anything they needed to intercept acts of terrorism. The NSA then gained the power to wiretap individual’s phones, obtain their business records and spy on anyone they deemed could be suspected of terrorism. It was a time of panic for the United States, and these excessive searches without warrants weren’t given a second thought. However, it is now 2014 and citizen’s privacy is still being compromised more than ever without…
Having surveillance means that the government has the right to watch and record basically everything people do. The government put video cameras up in schools, buildings, stoplights, and satellites covering virtually everywhere. According to Alex Sinha (2013) NSA, the National Security Agency, started collecting as much information and data as possible from permanent residence in the United States in hopes of reducing the odds of another terrorist attack (p. 862). In 2013, Sinah also claimed in the early 1960s, NSA began keeping a “watch list” which was a list of American citizens who were traveling to Cuba and were questionable to pose a danger to the President (p.864). Sinha (2013) then goes on to state in 1967 the watch list turned into a systematic attempt to track those Americans who were questioned to be involved in a civil disturbance.…
Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially curtail its domestic surveillance. Plan: The government will curtail its surveillance by only viewing collected data by means of a warrant. Intro-After the NSA reported their first transparency avowal, the publisher Omicron Technology Limited stated, “The report said 19,212 "national security letters"—administrative subpoenas that allow the FBI to collect information without a warrant—were issued last year, containing 38,832 requests for information.” These unwarranted leaks are why this problem needs to be solved. That is why we stand resolved that “The United States federal government should substantially curtain its domestic surveillance.…
The creation of the Department of Homeland Security and establishment of the US Patriot Act was a result of the understanding that in order to have freedom, certain aspects of daily life would have to change. One aspect of change has been law enforcement’s move towards militarization, evolving from basic military like organizational structure to changes in uniform colors, equipment and vehicles. Citizens see this evolution as a “police vs citizens” stance rather than community oriented policing. The other and more clandestine policing problem has been the National Security Agency (NSA) and its domestic surveillance. While domestic surveillance is said to provide valuable evidence to prevent terrorism, it has resulted in whistleblowers like Edward Snowden leaking classified information exposing the extent of the surveillance and the infringement on personal privacy.…
Introduction In this paper, I will be talking about the act of congress called the Patriot Act which is officially called USA PATRIOT (an abbreviation of “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001”). The act was a reaction to the September 11 terrorist attacks perpetrated by the terrorist group Al-Qaeda, as well as the anthrax attacks that happened soon after. The main concern of the act was to increase security, and in that increase of security, federal organizations and agency like the NSA (National Security Agency) were now allowed to survey citizens without warrants. Current Use…
The rapid advancement of technology has allowed surveillance to be performed on an unprecedented scale. Individuals, however, should not be subjected to unwanted spying. According to Harvard Law Review by Samuel D. Warren and Louis D. Brandeis, privacy is “the right to be let alone,” meaning freedom from all forms of surveillance and privacy-invasive behavior. Privacy protects the reputations of individuals. It also protects minorities from unwanted searches and accusations.…
“The systematic installment of mass surveillance” The article “A surveillance society” by William E. Thompson and Joseph V. Hickey was an article created to inform the reader about modern surveillance and also how the intensity of modern surveillance has been amplified through past events that changed the course of society. In country’s all over the world surveillance is increased dramatically weather it’s in public places using cameras or through a private citizens personal information. “A surveillance society” talks about one key factor that has contributed to this increase Is terrorism such as the 2001 September 11th terrorist attack when two planes were hijacked and flown into the world trade center’s killing over 3000 people, after that…
(BBC News. Snowden, Jan. 17, 2014). These surveillance issues caused for a public backlash against government surveillance and the NSA. The majority of Americans disapprove of the NSA’s collection of telephone records and more and more people are beginning to be concerned about the country’s lack of civil liberty protection because they don’t believe their liberties should be sacrificed in the name of counter-terrorism. (Civil Liberty in America, Gao, G May 29, 2015).…
Surveillance: A Tale Told By An Idiot It is true people do hate America but the entire world is hated and distrusted by someone. There are times that I myself have found reasons to look at America as nothing more than an enemy that looks to hold me down, but the true question is why do groups that are defined as terrorist organisations hate America as much as a Star Wars fans hates the Prequels. The United States may not be the best nation on earth but by the view of the people that live here and even outsiders have had views of the United States as the promise land it once was, where you can build your dreams from nothing. Still there are people on the outside and inside that have a nova like hatred for the actions the American government…
