According to the levels of Maslow's Hierarchy, Matt first uses the level of Love. Matt is a character from Gathering Blue that grows into a young man. First he has a family,that cares for him. Matt previously had a friendship with Kira. He is one of Kira’s best friends, and they are like siblings to each other. When Kira met Matt’s mother she looked surprised, because she thought his mother would be extremely nice.Kira thought Matt’s mom was rude. Matt helps Kira with anything she needs, because Kira has no family.Because Kira also has a tight relationship with Thomas, Thomas and Matt become even closer than they were already.Unlike Kira and Jo, Matt has a house not an apartment. He has a mother and siblings, along with an unknown father. He lives off a trail of the village. Matt, suspiciously goes missing for two days. In the meantime Kira and Thomas look for Matt all around the village. This is the first time Kira and Thomas both go to Matt’s house and meet his family at the door. Matt actually has a family that loves and cares for him. When Matt returns from his unknowing little “vacation”, he then switches levels to Self esteem. He turns into a respectful/responsible young man, who survived along in the forest for two days. He is more respectful to his peers, and brings “gifties” back for Kira. Unknowing, he has brought Christopher to Kira. Christopher is Kira’s blind dad, who was never taken by beasts. Matt is then more kind to his surrounding friends.
