Watchmen Character Comparison Essay

Each and every one of the masked adventurers in Watchmen, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, are very different. Each character grew up differently and is motivated by something different that leads their perceptions on right and wrong. For example, Rorscharch, Walter Kovacs, and the Comedian, Edward Blake, seem like polar opposites, yet they are very similar. Neither character was well liked by the other masked adventurers/vigilantes. Both characters remained focused on what they perceived as right. Despite their differences and opinions in terms of morals, the two remain friends and Rorscharch is very persistent in the hunt to find out who is responsible the murder of the Comedian. Growing up, Rorscharch had a very hard and unstable life. His mother was mean and cruel to him. An example of this can be found in chapter 5, “I shoulda listened to everybody else! I shoulda had the abortion!” on page 182 (Moore). In the seventh panel of this nine-strip panel, Rorscharch’s mother is holding him by the collar of his shirt and grabbing his face, with tears rolling down his cheeks, he is told by his mother that she regrets giving birth to him(Moore). Though the two were very different, throughout Watchmen, Rorschach conducted his own investigation of his friend, the Comedian. Rorschach and the Comedian both felt as if, according to page 9, panel three, “The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and save us!”(Moore).
