The title of chapter four, of the book, The Lord of Flies, by William Golding, is “Painting faces and long hairs”. The title, relates to the concept of savagery because as in the war, soldiers tend to paint their faces in order to be invisible to the enemy, and therefore trick and brutally attack them, the young boys of the novel decided to follow the well-known war strategy in order to surprise and murder the helpless pig, thus, they can feed themselves, when the night comes. The lack of rules and instructions of proper behavior in both cases brought in the light the fundamentally evil nature of mankind and resulted in inexcusable actions. In order to remain civilized, one must be able to uphold their moral values while at the same time being able to mask their savage and primitive roots. In William Golding’s The Lord of the Flies, a tragic plane crash forced a group of boys onto a remote island in which they were left with two options: to remain civilized or allow the island to change them for the worse and force them into their savage nature. Following gathering for an assembly, two leaders emerged; Ralph, who tended to be focused on the being rescued aspect, and Jack, whose main priority was hunting and filling his empty stomach. Jack has been using masks to cover up his face, which the reader can infer as his identity. We can believe he covers up his identity to show that he is know chief, no longer the Jack we first met at the beginning of the novel. Therefore, this quote supports the theme of identity because is provides as an example of a change in a character, one that identifies who they are. In this scene continued from the quote above, it is clear that the boys believe that Jack now has the ultimate authority, not Ralph.…

For instance, Simon and the dead pig’s head, known as the Lord of the Flies, spoke to each other. However, a dead pig’s head can not realistically talk. The dead pig’s head warned Simon about Jack, Roger, Maurice, Robert, Bill, Piggy, and Ralph (Golding 144).…

Golding uses masks and disguise in lord of the flies to allow the reader to develop a deeper understanding of the complexity of the characters. While applying paint to his face, Jack is described as ‘planning his new face’. This suggests to the reader that Jack has changed as a person from the beginning of the book. Jack continues this contrast in character when he is described as ‘snarling’ and having a ‘sinewy body’. His now ‘sinewy body’ suggests that he is built and muscular, sinewy being more of an adjective to describe a grown man.…
