First, she established one of the first laboratories in the United States back at Wellesley College. She wrote many books and articles and became a “steady contributor to the psychological literature” (Furumoto). In the autumn of 1898 she was promoted to a professor. She spent countless hours in the lab and furthering her education. While researching she invented the paired-associate technique. She even came up with a new way to look at psychology “as a science of self” (Furumoto). Succeeding William James, she became the first woman as President of the American Psychological Association. She became an honorary member to Phi Beta Kappa and became the “first honorary woman member of the British Psychological Association” (Historical Note). Furthermore, she was even “awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree by Columbia University in 1909 and a Doctor of Laws degree by Smith College in 1910” (Historical Note). Through her actions she left many doors for woman to follow and influenced many. Many of the people she studied with, now prestigious professors at other big colleges, and Munsteburg himself fought Harvard for her to get awarded her Ph.D. But, she was never rewarded it.
Overall through this you can see what a spectacular woman this Mary Whiton Calkins was. She overcame diversity and proved to the world wrong, that woman can think and get educated. She got her basic education and then jumped at all other form of education that came her way.
