The birth of James brought on congratulations through all of Europe, but this happiness was short-lived. When James was born, Mary no longer desired to be Darnley’s (Cavendish, “Mary, Queen of Scots Marries in Edinburgh”). After the terror he put her through, she wanted nothing more to do with him, but there were others who conspired to have him dead (“Mary, Queen of Scots: Biography, Facts & Information”). The nobles, for instance, were furious with Darnley for betraying them and helping Mary escape custody. For their revenge, the nobles blew up Darnley’s house. Darnley’s corpse was later discovered strangled in the garden (Malpass). These events took their toll on Mary. Although she would have been glad for Darnley’s timely death, the nobles portrayed Mary as the culprit behind his murder (“Mary, Queen of Scots: Biography, Facts & Information”). If that wasn’t enough, she was without a husband again. Out of the nobles responsible for Darnley’s death, one was particularly interested in Mary. Mary became the center of the Catholics’ attention in England (“Mary, Queen of Scots”). She was at the heart of plots to eliminate Elizabeth. At first, Mary only plotted with the conspirators for her escape since she was there against her will (“Mary, Queen of Scots: Biography, Facts & Information”). However, as the years progressed and Mary knew she was not any closer to being freed, she resorted to methods that were more devious. In 1586, Mary collaborated with another plotter named Anthony Babington to assassinate Elizabeth. In a letter sent to Babington by Mary, Mary stated that she wanted her rescuers to kill Elizabeth. When Elizabeth’s spy came across the letter, Elizabeth was able to use the letter as evidence against
