Adversity can be painful and stressful, but it can have a positive impact on our character and how we are able to grow as an individual. Dr. King’s belief can be supported with examples from literature, history, modern society, and my own personal experience.
The first example that supports Dr. King’s belief is from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, with the character Atticus Finch. Atticus is lawyer who lives in Maycomb County, Alabama, where whites do not accept blacks as equal. He is asked to defend a man named Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape. This makes it really difficult because Atticus knows that Tom will receive an unfair trial just because he is African American. King's belief, is the story of Anne Frank. Anne Frank was a Jewish girl who lived during the time of World War II. She and her family had to go into hiding in order to protect themselves and avoid capture. Anne and the seven others were in hiding for nearly two years until they were found and transferred to the concentration camps. Throughout this whole experience, she had to stay positive. The character trait the she showed was optimism. She always looked at the glass as half full rather than half empty. She had to have a great deal of optimism in order to overcome this obstacle in her life. Another character trait that she showed was pride. Anne was proud to be Jewish and this hardship tested her loyalty. She would not let anybody tell her that she was wrong for standing up for what she believed in. These examples support Dr. King’s belief because Anne Frank never would have discovered how optimistic or loyal she was able to be without this misfortune in her life. Her positive attitude and pride were necessary in order to make these hard times
