1. Name the main character of the book and describe 3 traits of their personality. One of the main characters was Martin Ganda. He was really caring towards his family because all his life he tried to be the best son and do good in school so he could make money to support his family. He was also very committed because he promised to always write back to his pen pal, even though she lived far away an it cost him a lot of money to send letters. He also would not give up on going to an American college. And he was smart because he always did really well on his tests and one time he even got the highest score in the entire region.
2. What is the main setting in the story? (location, time period, environment) There were two main settings: Martin’s home in Zimbabwe and Caitlin’s home in Pennsylvania. Martin’s town is really poor and dirty and people have to share houses and food and he walks to school. Caitlin’s town has nice big houses and a mall and a good school. The whole story takes place in the late 90s and early 2000s.

She decided that she would help since her family had more money than his. They sent him money, clothes, shoes and other important supplies that helped his family survive.
