In the story a martian odyssey (Stanley Weinbaum) there is not a lot to prove my thesis but there is some at the start of the story when our protagonist he thinks tweel is not an intelligent creature but is quickly proven wrong when he tries to communicate with him he quickly picks up the words to have a very basic conversation using the numbers and basics words like bad, rock, (see page five for more information.) The crew at first thought that it was a project from the government to colonize mars then they thought that it was their dead relatives alive again. but the captain then realized that it was shape-shifters the other crew could have thought so too because they were all killed and buried even the crew member who died during the trip on the way to mars which show that they are able to feel compassion and grieve for the dead even if they killed them.
In the story the sound of thunder there is some support for my thesis too because they use the theme of going back in time it was slightly off from my other uses for my thesis because they were not interacting with another species of intelligent life but the same concept applies because the main character was straight up cocky when the story started he thought that the t-rex would be no big deal and be that it would not intimidate him but he was wrong and ended up changing the whole world because he was not ready to hunt a
