Martha Mcbride Concrete Angel Essay

The song Concrete Angel, was written by Martha McBride. This song portrays the story of a young girl who is being abused at home. The main theme in this song is that the abuse goes unnoticed. I believe the song was written to demonstrate society's apathy in calling attention to the ugly things in life. Throughout the song, people notice but do nothing. Many situations almost identical to the one portrayed in the song happen in real life. In this song several poetic techniques are used. Right away when looking at the lyrics I could see the metaphors and similes that were present throughout the song. There are many sound techniques used in the song Concrete Angel written by Martha McBride. While looking at the lyrics of the song I immediately noticed rhyme and slant rhyme. An example of rhyme in this song is in the first stanza when it states, “She walks to school with the lunch she packed / nobody knows what she's holding back / wearing the same dress she wore yesterday / she hides the bruises with the linen and lace”. In this stanza the last words, packed and back, which are in lines one and two rhyme. Another sound technique found in this song is slant rhyme. This technique can also be found in the first stanza when it says “Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday / she's hides the …show more content…
The main tone of the song is sad, but the song also consists of more specific tones. Some of the specific tones include hopeless, brave, peaceful, sorrow, neglect and many others. An example of this would be in the first stanza of the song, “Bearing the burden of a secret storm / Sometimes she wishes she was never born”. The tone of that specific line is hopeless. Another specific tone can be found in the fourth stanza. “Somebody cries in the middle of the night / The neighbors hear but they turn out the light”. Neglect is the specific tone in that line. Specific tone can be found all through the song and focuses on each individual

I remembered that the lyrics tried to convey to us the logic of war being inevitable and that what was once on the grounds of the battlefield will be replaced my new things. In a way I was able to interpret that as a new beginning but also a true sad part of our life. The fact that she used an inspiring tone to talk to us, she drew us in with the climax tension of the song. Even when it seemed like the song was dying out, she and the other performers managed to keep us in with the groove of the music till the song had ended…

Also, Agee’s description of the song only focuses on the sounds that the singers make; He makes no attempt to describe the lyrics of the song or interpret the song to understand any underlying message. Agee is aware that he cannot understand the song, and thus does not make a futile attempt to do so. Instead, he describes the sounds he encounters in terms of metaphor, portraying the tenor’s voice as a “long, plorative line that hung like fire on heaven, or a whistle’s echo, sinking, sunken, along descents of modality I had not heard before,” and the baritone as “lift[ing] a long black line of comment…murmuring along monotones between major and minor, nor in any determinable key” (27). This method of describing the singing appears to give the…

In The Diary of Anne Frank you get a feeling of hope, optimism, even knowing that the outcome is not a favorable one. In Catcher in The Rye it’s almost impossible to miss the sarcasm that is present throughout the book. Every book has a certain attitude about it, its tone, that varies from author to author depending upon the feelings that the author felt when writing that scene. For Anne Frank when writing her diary, she felt hopeful that one day her family would be able to come out of hiding, which explains the optimistic tone of the diary. For Salinger, he wanted to narrate the life of a boy observing and criticizing the world around him, resulting in a tone that is undeniably sarcastic.…

No one is able to fully understand what it is like to lose one of your senses until it happens. It is a natural and common occurrence for humans to wonder and attempt to describe what this may be like. People that have lost their hearing lose many things that others often take for granted, but is it possible that the silence could be enlightening? Joanne Diaz offers her opinion on this subject in “On My Father’s Loss of Hearing.” She conveys her theme of “love hurts much less in [deafness’] serenity” (Diaz line 28) through vivid imagery, simile, and tone.…

While the speaker includes mostly perfect rhymes, he does not use these exclusively. At the close of the first stanza, for instance, the speaker breaks the consistent rhyme scheme for the first time by including an off-rhyme, “While night comes on gently, / Dark like me— / That is my dream!” (7-9). The words “me” and “dream” are slant rhymes, as they sound quite similar but they do not rhyme perfectly with one another. Because the previous rhymes are all perfect, masculine rhymes, the slight difference between the words “me” and “dream” creates an unfamiliar, harsh sound for readers.…
