What is culture? It the knowledge and characteristics of certain groups of people which are defined by language, food, music, art, social habits and religion. In this essay, marriage practices of three different cultures will be discussed. The first marriage practice will be from the Indian culture. I chose this specific culture as I love the bright colours and it is very different from my own culture. The second will be a Greek wedding as this is my own culture therefore I can connect with it. The last culture I have chosen is a traditional Japanese wedding. I chose this specific culture as Japan and Japanese traditions spark an interest in me. Well that comes pretty close in reality. I am Greek Orthodox therefore I will be explaining a traditional Greek Orthodox wedding (The majority of Greeks practise Orthodox teachings). There are a lot of variations to the Greek traditions practised at weddings. Firstly, Greek engagements. Just like Indian weddings, Greek weddings use to be arranged but now that is a thing in the past for Greeks. It is usually customary for the groom-to-be to meet his girlfriend’s parents to ask them for her hand in marriage. It is also customary for a girl’s mother to start collecting items for her daughter’s marriage. A Greek couple normally exchanges engagement rings which is usually plain gold bands which they wear on their left hands. The bands are blessed at the wedding ceremony and they then move the rings to their right hands. This culture as you can see is very different from the previously mentioned Indian wedding in the fact that the couple will fall in love first and the marriage is not arranged in the Greek culture and also no rings are exchanged in the Indian culture. But there is a slight similarity where the man will go the woman’s parents (Greek Culture) and the man’s family will go to the woman’s family when they have found an interest in a girl for their son (Indian Culture). Traditional Greek dancing is a big part of the party. A dance known as the “Kaslamantiano” is performed. It is a large circle of as many guests as possible all dancing together. Many Greek weddings now also include some western customs such as throwing the bouquet or the groom retrieving the wife’s garter from under her dress. No such customs are ever practiced at Indian weddings. The bride’s dress is white whereas in the Indian culture, the dresses are very bright and colourful (never white) and are quite often in the form of a sarie. At the celebration it is tradition to smash and break plates to signify that it is a very important and significant occasion. It is interesting to note here that some Indian weddings do not end in a big celebration but rather the bride leaves with the groom to his home.
