The Grangerfords are in a feud with another aristocratic family called the Shepherdsons. One day, while strolling outside in the woods, Buck and Huck encounter a man on a horse. The two quickly take to the bushes. The man is known as Harney Shepherdson, whom Buck tried to kill from his hiding place. He took a shot but missed by a bit, and the two boys run back to the house. Huck later finds out from Buck that this feud between the two families has been going on for 30 years or so, but not many people remember why it started. The two families carry out this feud by killing members of each family. Buck said that his cousin was murdered by the Shepherdsons so the Grangerfords retaliated by murdering the Shepherdsons.

They discover an almost empty town, with most of the population attending a camp meeting a couple miles away. Huck and the king leave the duke at the printing office, as part of a plan to help with the whole runaway slave situation. At the camp, a preacher is conducting a sermon and the crowd was very passionate about what he was saying and many were mourning. The king saw this as an opportunity to make some profit. He begged the preacher to let him speak, and told everyone he was a pirate out in the Indian Ocean, but he was a changed man after seeing the face of death.
