interests such as stabilizing Host Nations' population in countries near the U.S. in order to prevent instability flowing into the U.S. The Marine Corps has conducted stability operations in Haiti on and off since the first U.S. occupation of Haiti in 1915. Haiti is strategically important to the U.S. national security strategy as it serves as a counterbalance to Cuba's communism regime. Since the early 1990's, the U.S. has worked with its regional military partners through U.S. Southern Command and diplomatic partners through the United Nations and Organization of American States to maintain Haiti's fragile infrastructure and economy. The Marine Corps' most recent support to Haiti's stability operations has been in the form of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR) in support of the United Nations Stabilization Mission and the aftermath of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2010. The HA/DR experience the Marines received during Haiti stability operations is invaluable in maintaining and protecting U.S. interests.
