Marine Biology, as defined by dictionary.com, is ¨The scientific study of organisms living in or dependent on the oceans.¨ When hearing this combination of words, most tend to think of working with cetaceans, or whales and dolphins, and pinnipeds, or seals, sea lions, and walruses. However, this is far from true. There are multiple branches and subdivisions, but most fall under of of two specialties. Thereś laboratory Marine Biologists and Field Operations Technicians. Marine Biological Laboratories and their experts are dedicated to scientific discovery. Their goal is to help the society and to provide a future by educating, researching, and experimenting. Field Operation Technicians are the ones who track the organisms, interact with them, …show more content…
Aristotle and his students were said to have studied organisms in tidepools, keeping records and drawings, in 384-327 BC. However the main person credited for the founding of marine biology and oceanography was Edward Forbes, a naturalist from Britain, in 1815-1854. However, he was most recognized for his “Azoic Theory” which states, “marine organisms do not live on seabeds below 300 fathoms (1800 feet)”. This theory was very quickly disproven. In 1828, the earliest studies of plankton occurred off of the Irish coast. The first ‘modern’ oceanographic expedition was Britain’s, The Challenger Expedition. The biologists on board first discovered organisms living at extreme levels below the surface in 1872-1876. These discoveries further disproved Forbes’ Theory. In 1902, one of the first sea exploration foundations was invented by the King of Sweden. It is known as ICES, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. More recently, in 1977, scientists discovered deep-sea thermal vents. The USA’s submersible, Alvin, discovered many new microscopic organisms in the vent, and unknown communities of organisms around it. This year scientists have made a discovery linking sharks to global warming. They have found out that sharks, especially Great Whites, have indirectly reduced the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere. Without Marine Biology and those who study it, we would know only a fraction of what is considered common knowledge today. A fraction of the knowledge that is vital to life today. We wouldn’t know about the bacteria, organisms, or or micro-organisms that are essential to every aspect of today. We wouldn’t know how to sustain life’s oceanic resources, or how overusing them can have dire consequences. In all, we wouldn’t know how to preserve or better the planet, since oceans make up over 71% of it. Since most people consider the Earth and the future important, I would argue that Marine Biology is

When someone look or think about the ocean, the most commun thought are that is a peaceful , beautiful , and wonderful place where they can find the most incredible creatures, also that the blue is so peaceful that just from see it make them calm. However does they know the deep-part of the ocean and what is hiding benit there. Most of the people don't know what is down there, specially what creatures live and how they survive to the extreme environment that is the deep-sea. The Giant Squid , Zombie Worms,Jellyfish and Yeti Crabs are some of the ”deep-sea creatures ,“ or, in other words they are the “survivors of the deep-sea, “ since they everyday survive to the low temperatures, the darkness and the hard way of getting food. This creatures…

Without sharks, the plankton eater population would grow out of control consuming the plankton we depend on for survival. According to sharksavers.org, “Sharks groom many populations of marine life to the right size so that those prey species don’t cause harm to the ecosystem by becoming too populous.” Several scientific studies validate that the reduction of sharks would result in loss of economically important shellfish and fish, such as tuna, “that maintain the health of coral reefs.” (sharksavers) The ocean is the life support system of the planet, it regulates climate and feeds many people.…

They share the food they make from photosynthesis with corals, and in the end corals lose their food sources and become weak (“What is Happening in the Ocean?”). Many types of plankton are affected by warmer oceans, and researchers found that when ocean temperatures rise, phytoplankton grow, but so do zooplankton and bacteria. The zooplankton grow faster and eat all of the phytoplankton, and this creates a bottleneck in the food chain that could create problems for the ocean’s food web. More than 100 million tons of carbon dioxide is absorbed into the ocean each day (“Sea Temperature”). Phytoplankton’s job is to suck up carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, and with less plankton, more carbon dioxide stays in the water (Biello).…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology. I loved the concept of studying unknown creatures that sit miles below the surface of our planet that no human has ever seen. I’ve read many textbooks and field guides over the years, which started as an amusing pastime. However, the more I read, the more I became completely and utterly engrossed in the subject which eventually shaped me into what I am today.…

Population success was a main concern of the article. The research took place in the Breton Sound in LA over a two year period. Understanding the concepts of the population dynamics is important for researchers and scientists so they can further predict the oyster population. They were able to test their ideas in the Breton Sound.…

They also were able to identify 4,000 new types of marine life (Sir John Murray-the Founder of Modern Oceanography). After they got back from the expedition Sir Wyville Thomson started to write a 50-volume Report on the Scientific Results of the Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger but started to come down with stress and eventually died. He left the job of finishing it all to his assistant John Murray. This was one of his major contributions to helping identify more on the ocean (Sir John Murray | biography).…

    Why Are Fossils Important

    • 215 Words

Fossils are considered essential for the study of biological evolution because it gives a blueprint of older species to help connect the dots on how species have changed over time. We can also see what characteristics are still around in the surviving organisms that branched out of older ones. Without fossils being there to help follow the road map of how organisms changed it would be harder to prove how evolution may have occurred in organisms. It was the discovery of fossils that help that crucial part of evolution theory to be true by having real physical evidence of how organisms have changed over long periods of time. Some things that can be learned by studying fossils is how old these organisms used to be.…

    The Importance Of Biology

Biology is the science of life or living matter in all forms and phenomena, especially with reference to origin, growth, reproduction, structure and behavior. Living beings have the desire to discover who they truly are and how they came to be the person that they are today. Many people have specific beliefs in an ultimate being that rules over all else, but most of these beliefs cannot be proven. The study of biology is based upon facts and hypotheses that can be tested and supported. Without biology it would be difficult to understand the beauty of life, and how living organisms are created and how the basic metabolic processes help organisms survive.…
