Marilyn spent most of her childhood in foster care and an orphanage. Marilyn never knew her father and her mother, Gladys, suffered with emotional and mental issues and she stayed in and out of the hospital. All though, Gladys wasn’t the prime care taker, she often visited Marilyn.
Around 1933, their luck changed. Gladys had saved enough money for a down payment on a house; this was the first time Marilyn actually lived with her mother. After a few months, Gladys became severely depressed and in January 1935 she lost it. This tragic episode resulted in her being taken to Norwalk State Hospital of Mental Diseases, where she was hospitalized for the rest of her life. At nine years old, Marilyn was put back in foster care where she was reportedly sexually assaulted multiple times by the father of the household. Jim and Marilyn’s marriage remained good, until Jim was shipped overseas. Marilyn moved in with Jim’s mother and started work at the Radio Plane Company, an WWII aircraft and parachute-inspecting plant. Unhappy with what she was doing, Marilyn started to abuse alcohol as a way to escape. In 1944, while working Marilyn was discovered by a photographer who visited the company to take photos of women in war work. The appealing shots of Marilyn resulted in her very first magazine cover. Marilyn was a natural beauty and had a magical ability to transform herself right before the
